Details Born in 1914 in Hämeenlinna (Finland), Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914-1999) studied at the School of Applied Arts in Helsinki, where he came into contact with functionalism, furniture designs of Alvar Aalto and the Modern Movement.

He ranks amongst the most influential figures in Finnish design and is remembered for work such as the Domus and Mademoiselle chairs. Tapiovaara was the first Finnish designer to participate in international development cooperation. The Ilmari Tapiovaara special coin is designed by Pro Finlandia medal winning designer Harri Koskinen, one of the most distinguished contemporary Finnish designers.
