Details The second Italian commemorative coin for 2015 marks the 750th anniversary of the birth of Dante Alighieri. Durante degli Alighieri, simply called Dante, was a major Italian poet of the late Middle Ages. His Divine Comedy, originally called Comedìa (modern Italian: Commedia) and later called Divina by Boccaccio, is widely considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature.

The drawing shows Dante with an open book in his left hand and the mountain of purgatory as background: detail from the Divine Comedy painted by Domenico di Michelino (1417-1491) in the dome of the church of Sa Maria del Fiore Florence; in the center, the monogram of the Italian Republic, "RI"; to the right, the inscription "R", the identifying mark of the factory of the coin of Rome; at the bottom, the inscription "SP" stands for Silvia Petrassi, and the dates 1265 and 2015, ie, the anniversary year and the issuance of currency, respectively; arched, the inscription "Dante Alighieri".
