Details The coin marks the 800th anniversary of the Construction of the first Fortress on the Rock in 1215.

On June 10, 1215, a detachment of Ghibellines led by Fulk Castello began building a fortress on the Rock of Monaco. This date marks the beginning of the modern history of the principality of Monaco. Ghibellines built their fortress into a strategic military position and a way to control the region, they also settled homes in Rock basis to support the garrisons. To attract people of Genoa and surrounding towns, they offered land and exonérèrent of taxes for newcomers.

The design shows a tower on the top of the rock. At the top the name of the issuing country ‘MONACO’ flanked by the Paris mint mark and the mint master mark.
