Details Tthe second commemorative 2-euro coin issued by the Vatican in 2016 is dedicated to the Jubilee or Holy Year of Mercy. The currency on the national side shows San Martin de Tours sharing his cloak with a poor man.

Pope Francis announced on 13 March 2015 in St. Peter's Basilica, the Jubilee of Mercy. The initial event of the Jubilee is the opening of the Holy Door which opens only during the Holy Year, while the rest of year remains sealed. The opening symbolically expresses the concept that the faithful are offered a "special way" during the jubilee, to salvation.

Mercy is a broad term that refers to benevolence, forgiveness and kindness in a variety of ethical, religious, social and legal contexts. The concept of a "Merciful God" appears in various religions, including Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Performing acts of mercy as a component of religious beliefs is also emphasized through actions such as the giving of alms, and care for the sick and Works of Mercy.
