Details Every year, the European Union chooses to address a subject in order to encourage debate and dialogue within and between member states. Raising the awareness of European citizens to a specific problem. The year of 2018 was designated to be the European Year of Cultural Heritage by the European Commission. Announced in 2017, it was officially launched on January 31, 2018.

At the center of the coin is the statue of Laocoön and his two sons fighting with snakes. Laocoön is a figure in Greek and Roman mythology and the Epic Cycle. He was a Trojan priest who was attacked, with his two sons, by giant serpents sent by the gods. In a semicircle from left to right the inscription "ANNO EUROPEO DEL PATRIMONIO CULTURALE" (European Year of Cultural Heritage) and above the year of issue "2018" and the mint mark "R". At the bottom the words "Città del VATICANO" and in the lower right corner the name of the engraver. In the lower left the initials of the engraver "CM INC." and on the outer edge 12 stars representing the European Union. It is included in a FDC Folder, in a FS box and in a philatelic-numismatic envelope. Issued May 31, 2018 to commemorate the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
