The rocks along the southern sea approaches to Helsinki have caused seafarers problems since time immemorial. When Helsinki became the capital of Finland, Tsar Nicholas 1st himself called for a lighthouse to be built beside this vital sea passage. The Harmaja lighthouse was finally erected in 1883 and since that time it has been a welcome signpost for all sailing off the Helsinki coastline.
