The coin commemorates the 100 anniversary of the death of Grand Duke William IV (22 April 1852 - 25 February 1912), who reigned as the sovereign Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 17 November 1905 until his death. He succeeded his father, Adolphe, Grand Duke of Luxembourg. He also held the titular title of Duke of Nassau. William IV was a Protestant, the religion of the House of Nassau. He married Marie Anne of Portugal, believing that a Roman Catholic country ought to have a Roman Catholic monarch. Thus since William IV all other Grand Dukes have been Catholic.
The coin depicts on the left side of the inner part the effigy of His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri, looking to the right, and superimposed on the effigy of Grand Duke GuillaumeIV, facing right. The text "Grands-Ducs de Luxembourg" and the year of the date "2012", flanked by the mint mark and the initials of the Mintmaster, appear above the effigies on the inner side of the coin. Faced with the effigies, the skyline of Luxembourg appears as a backdrop. The name "Henri" and "William IV", and the text "† 1912" described below their respective effigies. On the outer ring of the coin depicts the twelve stars of the European flag.
