In 2015, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the first contact between Portugal and Timor, the Portuguese mint INCM marked this event with the minting of a commemorative 2-euro coin. The national side of the coin depits a sixteenth century caravel, representing the arrival of Portuguese sailors to the island, and the woven roof of a house with its wooden sculptures, permanent memories of myths and legends, both iconic elements of Portugal and East Timor respectively.
Timor is an island at the southern end of Maritime Southeast Asia, north of the Timor Sea. The island is divided between the sovereign states of East Timor, on the eastern part, and Indonesia, on the western part. |
