The ninth coin of the series "World Heritage List of UNESCO" is dedicated to the Old town of Santiago de Compostela.
Santiago de Compostela, commonly known as Santiago, is the capital of the autonomous community of Galicia in northwestern Spain. The city has its origin in the shrine of Saint James the Great, now the city's cathedral, as destination of the Way of St. James, a leading Catholic pilgrimage route originated in the 9th century. In 1985 the city's Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The design reproduces the sculpture of Santiago placed at the center of the Puerta Santa of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. On the left, in a semicircle, the words "ESPAÑA", bottom left the year of issue "2018", and under the tick, the "M" crowned. On the outer edge 12-point five-star hotels representing the European Union.
Due to the low mintage, hundreds of people formed queues in front of the banks on the day of the release, sven before they opened their doors. In many cases the coins were exhausted in just a few hours, even although the amount of coins was restricted for each person. |
