Malta started a series of five 2 euro commemorative coins, all related to the Maltese constitutional history, which includes the following coins: 2011 - First Election of Representatives in 1849, 2012 - 1887 Majority Representation, 2013 - Establishment of Self-Government in 1921, 2014 - Independence from Britain in 1964 and 2015 - Proclamation of the Republic of Malta in 1974
The theme for this first coin is "First Elected Representatives – 1849". In that year the Maltese Islands had their first effective experience of political representation, through a process of democratic elections. On the 11 May 1849, Great Britain, by Letters of Patent, granted Malta a Constitution creating a Council of Government empowered to promulgate “laws for the peace, order and good government” of the country.
The centre of the coin shows a hand putting a vote into a ballot box, symbolising the process of democratic elections. Issue date: October 2011 |
