The minting and issuance of Thai coins is the responsibility of the Treasury Department, Ministry of Finance.

The Treasury Department organizes the production of circulation and commemorative coins and medallions at the Royal Thai Mint. To meet the continuing increase in coin demand as well as to upgrade equipment and integrated production methods, a new mint facility was built in a 50.4 acres site in Pathumthanl province and was completed by the end of 1997.

The department also operates a museum of coins, medals, decorations and Royal regalia at the Royal Decorations and Coins Devision. The division also makes a supply of coins, directly and by mail order, to both local and overseas collectors.

The 50 satang coin of 1996 circulating coin series was specially struck to mark the 50th Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej's Accession to the Throne in 1996.
