The coin marks the 60th year since the death of Nikos Kazantzakis. Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1957) was a Greek writer, celebrated for his novels, which include Zorba the Greek, Christ Recrucified (1948), Captain Michalis (1950, translated 'Freedom or Death), and The Last Temptation of Christ (1955). He also wrote plays, travel books, memoirs and philosophical essays. His fame was further spread in the English speaking world by cinematic adaptations of Zorba the Greek (1964) and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988).
The obverse shows a profile image of Nikos Kazantzakis. On the left the palmette appears as the mark of the Greek mint, while on the right on the shoulder of the image, the monogram of the artist of the Greek mint, Georgios Stamatopoulos. On the left, the legend of the issuing country "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ" (Hellenic Republic) followed by the year of issue "2017" and the commemorative legend "ΝΊΚΟΣ ΚΑΖΑΝΤΖΆΚΗΣ" (Nikos Kazantzakis) are inscribed on the left, in two arched lines adjusted to the outer edge of the nucleus. |
